Protecting Your Oral Health
If bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or loose teeth have you worried, a periodontal (gum) evaluation can give you clear answers and a practical path forward. Gum disease often develops quietly, and many people only notice it once symptoms interfere with daily life. At Northside Dental Co., we listen first, then evaluate. Our team approach means hygienists, assistants, and doctors work together to spot early signs, explain what they mean, and recommend treatment options that fit your goals and lifestyle. Whether you need a routine gum check as part of a comprehensive exam or a more focused gum disease screening after bleeding or sensitivity, we aim to make every visit understandable, comfortable, and neighborhood-friendly.
What Is a Periodontal Evaluation?
A periodontal evaluation is a focused exam that measures the health of the tissues supporting your teeth, including gum tissue and the underlying bone. During the visit, the clinician gently measures pocket depths around each tooth to check for attachment loss, looks for inflammation or bleeding, and evaluates gum recession or tooth mobility. Digital X-rays and intraoral photos are often used to assess bone levels and visualize areas not visible to the naked eye, supporting a precise diagnosis. This isn’t just a quick check; it’s a diagnostic step that helps distinguish between gingivitis, which is reversible, and periodontitis, which requires a targeted care plan to prevent further damage. A periodontal evaluation is also commonly combined with other preventive services, such as routine cleanings, fluoride treatments, and oral cancer screenings, to give a complete picture of your oral health.
Benefits of Periodontal (Gum) Evaluations
Regular periodontal evaluations protect more than just your smile. Early detection through a gum disease screening helps stop infection before it affects the jawbone or leads to tooth loss. When we identify trouble early, conservative treatments like targeted deep cleanings or improved home care often restore gum health without more invasive intervention. From a comfort perspective, monitoring gum health reduces the risk of painful abscesses and swelling, and it can improve overall oral sensitivity and chewing efficiency. There are also broader health benefits; research shows chronic gum inflammation can influence other systemic conditions, so keeping gums healthy supports whole-body wellness. Finally, a periodontal evaluation provides clarity, specific measurements, visual documentation, and a collaborative treatment plan so you know what to expect at every step.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Our goal is to make your periodontal evaluation straightforward and reassuring. If you are a new patient, your first visit can be scheduled two ways: a 60-minute Establish Patient Care appointment that includes X-rays, an oral cancer screening, a gum health evaluation, and a treatment plan, or a 90-minute New Patient Care with a Cleaning appointment that includes X-rays, oral cancer screenings, a gum health evaluation, and a standard cleaning if you are eligible. During the evaluation, a hygienist or doctor will record gum pocket depths, check for bleeding on probing, document recession or mobility, and may take digital X-rays to view bone levels and hidden areas of concern. A series of diagnostic X-rays is typically taken to give a complete picture of your oral health, far beyond what can be seen during a visual exam. Most commonly, this includes bitewing X-rays, which help detect cavities between teeth and evaluate bone levels, and a panoramic X-ray, which provides a full view of the entire mouth, including the jaw, sinuses, and wisdom teeth. In many cases, periapical X-rays may also be taken to capture detailed images of specific teeth from root to crown, especially if there are areas of concern. These images allow the dental team to identify issues early and assess overall health.
If your evaluation shows early gum disease, we will review home care techniques and may recommend more frequent maintenance cleanings or non-surgical periodontal therapy, such as scaling and root planing. For more advanced cases, we will discuss surgical and regenerative options or coordinate a referral, depending on what will best preserve your teeth and function. We explain the “why” behind each recommendation, review any sensations you may experience during or after treatment, and provide clear follow-up steps so you know how progress will be measured at future appointments.
