Digital X-rays in Northside Richmond
What Are Digital X-rays?
Most people remember the traditional dental X-rays of the past, which involved biting down on sharp pieces of plastic and waiting a long time for the film to develop in a darkroom. Digital X-rays have completely changed that experience. At Northside Dental Co., we use electronic sensors instead of film to capture detailed images of your teeth, bone, and supporting tissues. Think of it like the difference between an old film camera and a modern smartphone camera. The images are captured instantly and displayed on a computer screen, where they can be viewed by both the dentist and the patient.
These images allow us to see what is happening beneath the surface of your smile. While a visual exam is important, it only shows us the outside of your teeth. Digital X-rays reveal hidden issues such as decay between teeth, bone loss, or root infections. They are an essential tool for preventive care because they help us catch small problems before they become painful or expensive emergencies. Because the technology is digital, we can zoom in, adjust the contrast, and rotate the images to get the most accurate view of your oral health possible.
The Benefits of Modern Imaging
-
Reduced Radiation Exposure: Digital technology uses significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays, often up to 80% less, making it a safer choice for patients of all ages.
-
Instant Results for Faster Care: There is no waiting for chemicals to develop film. The images appear on our monitors within seconds, helping keep your appointment moving efficiently.
-
Better Diagnostic Accuracy: We can enlarge and enhance digital images to spot tiny fractures or early-stage cavities that might be invisible on a standard film x-ray.
-
Environmentally Friendly: Because we do not use lead foils or harsh developing chemicals, digital imaging is a much greener option for the Richmond community.
-
Enhanced Patient Education: Since we can show you the images on a large screen right at your chair, you can see exactly what our doctors see, helping you feel more involved in your treatment.
-
Easy Sharing and Storage: These files can be easily sent electronically to specialists or insurance companies, reducing the risk of lost records and speeding up insurance claims.
The Process: What to Expect
Getting digital X-rays at our Richmond office is a quick and comfortable process. You will be seated in one of our modern treatment rooms and covered with a protective lead apron to ensure safety. Our team uses portable Nomad x-ray systems, handheld devices that allow us to take images without you having to move to another room. This technology is designed to be much less intimidating than the large, bulky machines used in traditional dental offices.
We will place a small, rounded sensor inside your mouth. This sensor is designed with smoothed edges to be as comfortable as possible. We may ask you to bite down gently to hold the sensor in place while we capture the image. This process only takes a few seconds per view. Usually, we take a few different angles to get a complete picture of your mouth. Once the images are captured, Dr. Tolbert or Dr. Yang will review them with you immediately, pointing out any areas of concern and celebrating the healthy parts of your smile.
Is This Right for You?
Almost every patient can benefit from digital X-rays as part of their routine care. If you are a new patient in our office, we usually recommend a full set of images to establish a baseline for your health. This allows us to track changes in your bone and tooth structure over time. For our regular patients, we typically take updated X-rays once a year or every eighteen months, depending on their history of cavities or gum disease.
This service is especially important if you are experiencing specific symptoms. If you have a toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, or swelling in your gums, an X-ray is the only way to find the source of the trouble. It is also a necessary step for patients considering restorative work such as dental implants, crowns, or bridges, as it helps ensure the underlying bone is strong enough to support the new dental work. If you are pregnant or have specific medical concerns, we always encourage you to discuss them with our team so we can tailor the frequency of your imaging to your needs.
